New HVAC Installation in Greenville: What to Expect from Start to Finish

Waldrop Plumbing Air Electric

Greenville’s housing market is booming, and many homeowners are upgrading aging HVAC systems to keep up with modern comfort expectations and energy efficiency standards. Whether you’re in a historic home near downtown, a 1990s build in Five Forks, or a newer development in Simpsonville, the installation process matters as much as the equipment you choose.

Our installation crews — including Lukas, Paris, and Bailee — handle HVAC replacements across Greenville County every week. Here’s what a professional installation looks like.

Step 1: The In-Home Assessment

Before we quote a price or recommend equipment, a comfort advisor visits your home and performs a Manual J load calculation. This accounts for:

  • Square footage and ceiling height
  • Insulation levels (walls, attic, crawlspace)
  • Window count, size, and orientation
  • Number of occupants
  • Ductwork condition and sizing
  • Current system performance issues

Greenville homes vary significantly — a 1960s brick ranch in Taylors has very different needs than a 2015 two-story in Simpsonville. A proper load calculation ensures the system is sized correctly. Oversized systems short-cycle and underperform on humidity. Undersized systems run constantly and can’t keep up on the hottest days.

Step 2: System Selection

Based on the load calculation, we present options at multiple price points:

Good: Standard efficiency system (14-15 SEER2) — reliable, affordable, meets current code requirements.

Better: Mid-efficiency system (16-17 SEER2) — lower operating costs, often qualifies for utility rebates.

Best: High-efficiency variable-speed system (18-20+ SEER2) — lowest operating costs, best humidity control, quietest operation. Heat pump versions qualify for federal tax credits up to $2,000.

We carry multiple brands so the recommendation is based on your home’s needs, not a manufacturer quota.

Step 3: Installation Day

A typical system replacement takes one day for a straight swap. Our crews arrive early, protect your home’s floors and walls, and follow a systematic process:

Removal: The old indoor and outdoor equipment is disconnected, removed, and loaded for proper disposal. We handle everything — you don’t need to arrange separate pickup.

Indoor unit installation: The new air handler or furnace is set in place, connected to the ductwork, and wired. If transitioning from a furnace to a heat pump air handler (or vice versa), additional modifications may be needed.

Outdoor unit installation: The new condenser is placed on a level pad, refrigerant lines are connected (brazed, not just tightened), and electrical connections are made.

Refrigerant charge: The system is evacuated with a vacuum pump (to remove moisture and contaminants), then charged with the precise amount of refrigerant specified by the manufacturer. This step is critical — overcharging or undercharging directly affects efficiency and equipment life.

Thermostat: A new thermostat is installed and programmed (or your existing smart thermostat is reconnected and configured).

Step 4: Startup and Testing

This is where many installers cut corners. Our crews don’t:

  • Temperature split test: Measure supply and return air temperatures to verify 15-20°F differential in cooling mode.
  • Airflow verification: Measure static pressure to confirm proper airflow across the coil.
  • Electrical readings: Record voltage, amperage, and capacitor readings for baseline documentation.
  • Drain test: Verify condensate drainage is flowing properly.
  • Homeowner walkthrough: We show you how to operate the thermostat, where the filter is, and what maintenance you should do.

Greenville-Specific Considerations

Humidity: Greenville’s humidity is significant from May through September. A properly sized system with good dehumidification capability makes a noticeable difference in comfort. Variable-speed systems excel here because they run longer at lower speeds, removing more moisture.

Pollen: Greenville consistently ranks among the highest pollen cities in the US. If indoor air quality is a concern, we recommend pairing your new system with a high-MERV filter and UV-C germicidal light.

Ductwork: If your existing ducts are original to a home built before 1990, consider duct sealing or replacement alongside the new system. New equipment pushing air through leaky ducts is like buying a sports car and driving it on flat tires.

Serving All of Greenville County

Our installation teams work across Greenville, Mauldin, Simpsonville, Greer, Taylors, Travelers Rest, Fountain Inn, Piedmont, and surrounding communities. We pull permits, schedule inspections, and handle everything so you don’t have to.
