Why Is There Water Under My Sink?

why is there a leak under my sink?

Well… that’s never a fun surprise.

You open the cabinet under the sink to grab somethin’ and suddenly there it is — water where water definitely shouldn’t be.

Maybe it’s just a little puddle.

Maybe everything under there is soaked.

And immediately your brain starts goin’:
“Is this a big problem?”
“Did a pipe burst?”
“How long has this been leaking?”

Now before you panic, take a breath. A lot of under-sink leaks are pretty common, and many of ’em start small. But small leaks have a nasty habit of turnin’ into expensive problems if they sit too long.

So let’s talk about a few reasons you might be finding water under your sink — the Wally way.

🚰 A Connection May Be Loosenin’ Up

One of the most common causes is a loose connection under your sink.

Daily use, vibration, temperature changes, and time, fittings can cause loose connections overtime.

Other times it only leaks while the water’s running.

You may notice:

  • Tiny water droplets on pipes
  • Damp cabinet walls
  • Water collecting near shut-off valves
  • A small puddle that keeps coming back

And the tricky part?

A slow drip can go unnoticed for weeks before somebody finally spots it.

🔧 The Drain Could Be Leaking

If the water shows up mostly after using the sink, it’s possible that the drain assembly is involved.

The seals around your drain keep everything watertight, but overtime those seals can wear down or crack.

That can let water sneak out underneath the sink every time you wash your hands or run the faucet.

Sometimes homeowners notice:

  • Dampness directly under the drain
  • A musty smell in the cabinet
  • Water only appearing after the sink is used

Constant moisture can slowly damage the cabinet underneath.

🚿 Supply Lines Don’t Last Forever

Those hot and cold water lines connected to your faucet work hard every day, but they wear down the older they become.

Supply hoses can weaken with age, fittings can corrode, and small leaks can start forming around the connections.

You might notice:

  • Water near the back of the cabinet
  • Rust around fittings
  • Dripping while the faucet is running
  • Water stains around the valves

And if one of those hoses fully gives out?

Well… let’s just say it turns into a much bigger day real quick.

🪠 That Curved Pipe Could Be the Problem

That bendy-looking pipe underneath your sink is called the P-trap.

Its job is to help drain water while also blocking sewer odors from sneaking back into your home.

But sometimes those pipes crack, shift, or loosen over time.

Especially in older homes or under sinks that have had a few clogs over the years.

A lot of times, you’ll only notice the leak while the sink is actively draining.

💧 Sometimes Leaks Start Higher Up

Sometimes the water under the sink isn’t actually coming from underneath at all.

A faucet leak can make its way into the cabinet below.

While it looks like the pipes are leaking, the real issue could actually be up top.

⚠️ Don’t Ignore Small Issues

A little water may not seem like a big deal right away.

But over time, that moisture can lead to:

  • Mold growth
  • Warped cabinets
  • Soft flooring
  • Bad smells
  • Water damage
  • Higher water bills

And the longer it sits hidden under there, the more damage it can quietly cause.

🦭 What Should You Do?

If you find water under your sink:

✅ Dry everything out
✅ Remove anything stored underneath
✅ Watch to see when the leak happens
✅ Check for dripping pipes or wet connections

And if you can’t figure out where it’s coming from?

That’s usually a good sign it’s time to have a plumber take a closer look.

Because sometimes what looks like a tiny leak is really the start of a bigger issue hiding behind the cabinet or inside the wall.

A Small Leak Can Turn Into a Big Mess

Most under-sink leaks don’t start as disasters.

They start as tiny drips people barely notice.

But catching the problem early can save you from a whole lotta cleanup, repairs, and frustration later on.

So if you keep finding water under your sink, don’t just toss a towel under there and hope for the best.
