Fall Indoor Air Quality: Why the Season Change Affects Your Home’s Air

Waldrop Plumbing Air Electric

Fall in the Upstate brings cooler temperatures, beautiful foliage — and a shift in indoor air quality that most homeowners don’t think about. As you close windows, fire up the furnace for the first time, and seal up the house, the air you’re breathing changes. Here’s what our HVAC team wants you to know.

Why Fall Is a Critical Season for Indoor Air Quality

The Seal-Up Effect

During summer, you likely had windows open occasionally — even briefly. That natural ventilation brings in fresh outdoor air and dilutes indoor pollutants. When fall arrives and you close everything up, your home becomes a sealed box. Indoor pollutants — VOCs from cleaning products, off-gassing from furniture, cooking byproducts, pet dander, and dust — concentrate without dilution.

First Furnace Startup

The first time your furnace fires up each fall, it burns off dust that’s settled on the heat exchanger and burners over the summer. That slight burning smell is normal for the first 30 minutes. What’s not normal: a persistent burning smell, a rotten egg smell (gas leak), or headaches and dizziness (CO exposure).

Before that first startup, replace the air filter. A fresh filter captures the dust that gets stirred up during the transition.

Mold from Summer Humidity

Upstate SC summers leave moisture in places you can’t see — inside wall cavities, in crawlspaces, and on ductwork surfaces. As fall temperatures fluctuate, that residual moisture can promote mold growth. You may notice a musty smell from the vents when the system first runs.

Ragweed and Fall Allergens

While spring pollen gets the attention, fall ragweed season (August through November) is equally problematic for allergy sufferers. Once windows are closed, any pollen that made it inside continues to circulate through the HVAC system unless filtered out.

Fall Air Quality Checklist

1. Replace the air filter before the first furnace use. Consider upgrading to a MERV 11 or MERV 13 for better allergen capture.

2. Schedule a fall HVAC tune-up. Our technicians clean the burners, inspect the heat exchanger, test for CO, and clean the blower — all of which directly affect air quality.

3. Test CO detectors. Carbon monoxide risk increases when gas heating systems fire up. Test every CO detector in the home and replace batteries (or the unit, if it’s over 7 years old).

4. Clean the condensate drain line one final time before the cooling season ends. Residual moisture in a clogged line creates a perfect mold environment.

5. Run bathroom exhaust fans for 15 minutes after showers. With the house sealed up, moisture from showers has nowhere to go — it condenses on surfaces and promotes mold.

6. Consider a whole-home humidifier or dehumidifier. Fall in the Upstate can swing between humid and dry within the same week. Maintaining 40-50% indoor humidity keeps air comfortable and prevents both mold growth (too humid) and dry skin/static (too dry).

7. Have your ductwork inspected if you notice unusual odors or excessive dust when the system runs. Fall is the ideal time for duct cleaning before the heating season begins.

For Allergy Sufferers

If fall allergies are significant in your household, these upgrades make a measurable difference:

  • MERV 13 filter (verify your system can handle the airflow restriction)
  • UV-C light on the evaporator coil (kills mold and bacteria in the air stream)
  • Whole-home air purifier (treats all circulating air, not just one room)
  • ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator) (brings in fresh outdoor air while recovering energy)

The Transition Tune-Up

Our fall HVAC tune-up addresses both heating performance and air quality. It’s the single most effective step for ensuring clean, comfortable air throughout the heating season.
