Gas Line Warning Signs Every Homeowner Must Know

Natural gas powers furnaces, water heaters, stoves, dryers, and fireplaces in many Upstate SC homes — particularly in the Greenville, Spartanburg, and Greer areas served by Piedmont Natural Gas. It’s safe when properly installed and maintained. But our technicians treat every gas-related call with a level of seriousness that other repairs don’t require. As our plumber Chad puts it: “Water leaks cause damage. Electrical problems cause fires. Gas leaks can cause explosions. The stakes are different.” Know the signs.

Warning Signs of a Gas Leak

Rotten Egg Smell

Natural gas is odorless. Utility companies add mercaptan – a chemical that smells like rotten eggs or sulfur – specifically so you can detect leaks. If you smell it inside your home, near gas appliances, or around your yard near the gas meter or underground line, take it seriously.

Hissing or Whistling Sound

A pressurized gas leak near a fitting, valve, or pipe joint can produce an audible hiss. If you hear it near a gas appliance, the gas meter, or along the gas line route, do not try to find the exact source – leave and call for help.

Dead or Dying Vegetation

An underground gas line leak kills grass and plants above it. If you notice a patch of dead grass in an otherwise healthy lawn – especially in a linear pattern following a utility route – it could indicate a buried gas line leak.

Physical Symptoms

Low-level gas exposure causes headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and breathing difficulty. If multiple family members experience these symptoms simultaneously, especially when home and not when away, consider a gas leak as a potential cause.

Bubbling in Standing Water

If you see bubbles in puddles, wet areas, or standing water near the gas line, gas may be escaping through the soil.

What to Do If You Suspect a Gas Leak

1. Do not turn on or off any electrical switches, lights, or appliances. A spark can ignite gas. 2. Do not use your phone inside the home. 3. Do not light matches, candles, or lighters. 4. Open windows and doors if you can do so quickly while exiting. 5. Leave the house immediately. Get everyone – including pets – out. 6. Call 911 and your gas utility’s emergency line from outside or a neighbor’s phone. 7. Do not re-enter the home until the utility company or fire department declares it safe.

Signs Your Gas Line Needs Maintenance (Non-Emergency)

Not every gas line issue is an emergency. These signs indicate your gas infrastructure needs professional attention before a problem develops:

Yellow or orange burner flames: Gas appliance flames should burn blue. Yellow or orange flames indicate incomplete combustion – the gas-to-air ratio is off. This can produce elevated carbon monoxide levels.

Pilot lights that won’t stay lit: A failing thermocouple, draft issue, or gas supply restriction. Not an emergency but needs repair.

Appliance performance issues: A gas furnace that takes a long time to heat, a water heater that produces lukewarm water, or a stove with weak burner output may have a gas supply restriction.

Visible corrosion on gas lines or fittings: Corroded fittings are potential leak points. Have them inspected and replaced proactively.

Age of gas lines: If your home’s gas piping hasn’t been inspected in 20+ years, or if the home has older black iron pipe with significant corrosion, a professional inspection is worthwhile.

Gas Line Work Requires a Professional

All gas line installation, repair, and modification requires a licensed professional, proper permits, and inspection. Gas work is never a DIY project. The consequences of improper gas work – leaks, explosions, carbon monoxide poisoning – are severe.

Our technicians pressure-test every gas connection after any repair or installation. We verify zero leaks before turning the system live.
