Pet-Proof Your Home: Wally’s Tips for Pet Parents

Hey y’all! Wally the Walrus here — your tusky, tail-waggin’ ally for pet-proof plumbing and HVAC care in Upstate South Carolina

Now, I might not have fur (just my good ol’ walrus whiskers), but I sure do love pets. Dogs, cats, the occasional goldfish… they’ve all got a special place in my heart. But as much joy as our four-legged friends bring, I’ve seen ’em stir up trouble for plumbing and HVAC systems without even trying.

From fur-clogged filters to “mystery puddles” by the water bowl, I’ve seen it all. So let’s talk about how to keep your home’s comfort systems running smooth while keeping your pets safe and happy.

1. Keep Fur Out of the Air

Fur and dander are sneaky little rascals. They’ll hitch a ride on your HVAC airflow and clog up your filters in no time. If you’ve got pets, check those filters every month and change ’em when they’re dirty. A quick vacuum around your vents goes a long way, too.

2. Hide the Chew Toys (That Aren’t Toys)

Puppies especially love to gnaw on anything — cords, hoses, even pipes. Cover or block off anything chewable so your fur baby doesn’t end up in the doghouse (or worse, the vet’s office).

3. Be Picky About the Litter Box Spot

If the litter box sits near an air return vent, that “special” smell will spread to every room in your house. Move it somewhere with good ventilation but far from your HVAC airflow.

4. Stop Water Bowl Floods Before They Start

Pets can turn drinking water into a splash zone. Keep bowls on a mat and away from vents or outlets so you’re not dealing with water damage later.

5. Brush ‘Em Like You Mean It

A regular brushing session means less fur in the air, less in your filters, and a cleaner home overall. Plus, your pets will love the extra attention.

6. Close Off No-Go Zones

Your HVAC unit, sump pump, and water heater closet aren’t pet-friendly playgrounds. Keep doors shut or use gates to block curious noses and paws.

Wally’s Tip:

If you’re a pet household (and proud of it), consider upgrading to a high-MERV or HEPA filter. They catch more hair, dander, and allergens, which keeps your air fresher and your system happier.

Bottom Line from Wally

Pets bring love, laughter, and the occasional hair tumbleweed. With a few small changes, you can protect your plumbing and HVAC, keep your pets safe, and enjoy a comfier home all year long.

Waldrop has taken care of our HVAC since our house was built (2006). We get maintenance twice a year – spring and fall. This year, Kevin suggested the Phenomenal Aire unit. It cleans the air

A friend recommended Waldrop after he had a visit last week. Our A/C was not cooling as well as it should, and the Split “Smart” thermostat was doing crazy things on the first and 2nd
