Garbage Disposal Leaking? Signs You Need a Replacement
4.8 Google Rating
A garbage disposal is one of the hardest-working appliances in your kitchen. From handling food scraps to helping keep your sink draining smoothly, it plays an important role in your daily routine. But what happens when your garbage disposal starts leaking, rusting, or stops working altogether? At Waldrop Plumbing, Air & Electric, our experienced plumbers help homeowners throughout Greenville, Spartanburg, and Upstate South Carolina tackle garbage disposal problems before they turn into bigger plumbing headaches.
Recently, our plumber Jayden visited a customer’s home to replace a garbage disposal that had developed an internal leak due to rust. Here’s what homeowners should know about garbage disposal replacement and proper installation.
Why Do Garbage Disposals Start Leaking?
Garbage disposals are built to handle everyday kitchen use, but they don’t last forever. Over time, moisture, corrosion, and general wear can damage internal components.
Some common reasons a garbage disposal might leak include:
-
Internal rust and corrosion: Over time, metal components can deteriorate, allowing water to escape from the disposal.
-
Worn gaskets and seals: Rubber seals can deteriorate, creating gaps where water can leak.
-
Loose plumbing connections: Vibrations and everyday use can loosen connections between the disposal and drainpipes.
-
Cracked disposal housing: Aging or damaged components can develop cracks that allow water to leak underneath the sink.
In Jaden’s recent service call, the garbage disposal had rusted internally, causing a leak. Because the damage was inside the unit, replacing the disposal was the appropriate solution.
What Happens During a Garbage Disposal Replacement?
Replacing a garbage disposal involves more than simply removing the old unit and attaching a new one. Proper installation helps prevent leaks, drainage problems, and future plumbing issues.
Step 1: Remove the Old Garbage Disposal
The first step is safely disconnecting and removing the damaged disposal. A plumber will inspect the surrounding plumbing connections and prepare the sink for the replacement unit.
Step 2: Install the New Mounting Hardware
As Jayden explains in the video, the new garbage disposal includes hardware that connects the kitchen sink to the disposal itself.
Properly installing the mounting bracket and ensuring the gasket is seated correctly helps create a watertight connection.
Step 3: Connect the Dishwasher Drain
Did you know that many garbage disposals connect directly to your dishwasher’s drain hose?
One important installation step is removing the dishwasher drain knockout plug when the dishwasher drains through the disposal.
Forgetting this step can prevent your dishwasher from draining properly!
Once the disposal is mounted, the dishwasher drain hose must be securely connected to the appropriate inlet.
Step 4: Test the New Garbage Disposal for Leaks
After all the plumbing connections are secured, the final step is testing the system.
A plumber checks for leaks around the mounting assembly, drain connections, and dishwasher hose. This helps ensure everything is properly installed before the job is complete.
How Do You Know When to Replace Your Garbage Disposal?
Not every garbage disposal problem requires a replacement. However, certain warning signs may indicate that your unit is nearing the end of its lifespan.
Watch for these common signs:
-
Water pooling underneath your kitchen sink
-
Rust or corrosion around the disposal
-
Frequent clogs or poor drainage
-
Unusual grinding or rattling noises
-
A disposal that frequently jams or stops working
Most garbage disposals last approximately 8–15 years, depending on usage, maintenance, and overall quality.
If your disposal is leaking from the bottom due to internal corrosion, replacement is often more practical than attempting a repair.
