Wally’s Pipe-Protection Guide: Winter Edition

pipe protection guide

Well hey there, Upstate folks—Wally here! Whether you’re thawin’ out in Greenville, bundlin’ up in Spartanburg, wranglin’ leaves in Anderson, or just keepin’ cozy in Clinton, I’ve got your back when it comes to keepin’ your plumbing safe and sound when the temperatures drop.

Today, we’re talkin’ about how to prep your plumbing for a good ol’ Southern cold snap. And lemme tell ya, just ’cause we don’t see blizzards every year doesn’t mean we’re off the hook. One hard freeze and bam! —you’ve got a plumbing mess colder than a catfish in a cooler.

Why Frozen Pipes Are a Big Problem

You might think, “Wally, we’re in South Carolina—do I really need to worry about frozen pipes?”

Yup, you sure do.

In fact, homes in the South are more likely to suffer pipe bursts during freezes because many weren’t built with cold weather in mind. Pipes are often in crawl spaces, attics, or along exterior walls—places that get real chilly, real fast.

When water freezes, it expands. That pressure can split pipes like a pecan shell, leadin’ to leaks, flooding, and repairs that’ll make your wallet cry uncle.

Which Pipes are Most Likely to Freeze?

Not all pipes are created equal when it comes to freezin’ risk. Here’s where to focus your attention:

  • Outdoor water spigots – These are the first to freeze and the easiest to forget.
  • Uninsulated pipes in crawl spaces or attics – Outta sight, outta mind… until they’re frozen solid.
  • Pipes near exterior walls – They get colder quicker than you’d think.
  • Garage and basement plumbing – Especially if those areas don’t have heating.

Easy Steps to Protect Your Pipes

Here’s Wally’s tried-and-true, herring-approved winter plumbing prep list:

  1. Unhook and drain outdoor hoses.
Water trapped in a hose can freeze, back up, and crack your spigot or pipe.
  1. Shut off and drain outside faucets.
If you’ve got an indoor shutoff for outside spigots, use it! Then drain the line.
  1. Install faucet covers.
Foam faucet covers are cheap, easy, and make a whale of a difference.
  1. Wrap exposed pipes.
Foam insulation sleeves, heat tape, or even old towels can protect pipes from frostbite.
  1. Seal up drafts.
Use caulk or spray foam around vents, gaps, and holes where cold air sneaks in near pipes.
  1. Leave cabinet doors open.
Especially under sinks on exterior walls—this lets warm air circulate around the pipes.
  1. Let faucets drip on bitter cold nights.
A slow drip keeps water movin’ and reduces pressure buildup.
  1. Keep your home warm—even if you’re not home.
Set the thermostat no lower than 55°F if you’re travelin’ or out of town.

What If the Pipes Freeze Anyway?

Sometimes, even with prep, Old Man Winter wins a round. If you suspect a frozen pipe:

  • Turn on the faucet—if only a trickle comes out, suspect a freeze.
  • Check for frost on visible pipes.
  • Shut off the main water valve if you think a pipe burst—this helps prevent water damage.

Pro tip: Never use an open flame to thaw pipes. You don’t want to trade a freeze for a fire.

Final Thoughts from Your Favorite Walrus

Freezin’ pipes might sound like a winter horror story, but it’s one you can avoid with a little preparation. It’s easy to put off, but trust me—when that cold snap hits, you’ll be glad you did the work ahead of time.

Anyhow, if things go sideways? You know what to do.
