When temperatures climb in Upstate South Carolina, your air conditioner has to work hard to keep your home comfortable. But what happens when the AC is running and your home still isn’t cooling down?

An air conditioner that can’t keep up doesn’t automatically mean the system needs to be replaced. There are several possible causes, including airflow problems, a dirty outdoor unit, or an issue with the refrigerant charge.

That’s why a proper HVAC diagnosis involves looking at the entire system before making adjustments.

Start With the Basics: Airflow and Drainage

When an AC isn’t cooling properly, an HVAC technician will typically start with some of the fundamental system checks.

One important measurement is static pressure, which helps technicians evaluate how effectively air is moving through the HVAC system and ductwork. Restricted airflow can reduce cooling performance and put additional strain on the equipment.

Other areas to inspect include:

  • Air filters and filtration
  • Supply and return airflow
  • Drain lines
  • Indoor and outdoor coils
  • Overall system cleanliness

A clogged drain line or significant airflow restriction can create HVAC problems of its own. Checking these components first helps rule out other potential causes before making changes to the refrigerant charge.

Can a Dirty Outdoor AC Unit Affect Cooling?

Absolutely.

Your outdoor condenser needs to release heat that the refrigerant has carried out of your home. When dirt, grass, debris, or other buildup restricts the outdoor coil, the system may have a harder time transferring that heat.

That can hurt performance and force components such as the compressor to work harder than they should.

Keeping the system clean is an important part of maintaining efficient AC operation, especially during a hot South Carolina summer.

Low Refrigerant Could Be Part of the Problem

Once the basic system checks are complete, the technician can connect gauges to the outdoor unit to evaluate the system’s refrigerant pressures.

Refrigerant plays a critical role in the cooling process. If the system doesn’t have the appropriate refrigerant charge, it may run without providing the cooling performance your home needs.

In the system featured in our video, the technician compared the refrigerant readings with the manufacturer’s information while accounting for factors such as the outdoor temperature and system size. The readings indicated that the refrigerant pressures were somewhat lower than expected.

That provided another important piece of the puzzle for determining why the system wasn’t keeping up.

Why You Shouldn’t Automatically Add Refrigerant

If your AC isn’t cooling, adding refrigerant isn’t something that should be done based on a guess.

An HVAC technician needs to evaluate the system and determine what is actually causing the problem. Refrigerant readings are only one part of the diagnosis, and pressures can be affected by operating conditions and other system issues.

If a system is low on refrigerant, it’s also important to determine why. Air conditioning systems are closed systems, so refrigerant isn’t something that should normally need to be routinely “topped off.” A low charge can indicate a leak or another issue that needs further investigation.

Signs Your AC May Need Professional Attention

Your AC deserves a closer look if you notice:

  • The system runs for long periods without reaching the thermostat setting
  • Your home feels warmer than normal
  • Air coming from the vents isn’t as cool as expected
  • Your energy bills suddenly increase
  • The outdoor unit seems to be working unusually hard
  • The AC struggles during the hottest part of the day
  • The system turns on but doesn’t cool the home effectively

The sooner the underlying issue is identified, the better chance you have of addressing it before additional stress is placed on the system.
